Tiamat Wrath The Expanse James S A Corey Books Reviews

  • I just finished Tiamat's Wrath and gave it 5 stars. I never give anything 5 stars, and maybe after I detox I'll want to drop it back to 4 stars, but really, it was great. Writing, characters, plot, sciencey stuff, galactic politics. All really well done. Thoughtful but accessible, not a combination we often get in SF.

Also, not the place to start the series or even this three-book arc.

Like Nemesis Games, this is a story where the crew of the Roci are all off doing separate things, which is how we left it at the end of the previous book, Persopolis Rising. If you read that, then you'll remember that the black fleet that disappeared through the ring gates early on has come back with newer bigger ships and rolled Empire all over the 1300 worlds humans have access to. Naomi, Alex, Amos, and Bobbi are all back in the underground game, and Holden is prisoner to High Consul Duart, man who would be emperor, or as Jim puts it, his "Dancing Bear."

Bobbi and Alex are off running another captured ship, the Gathering Storm, which they took away from the Laconian Imperial fleet at the end of the last book, and Naomi is doing deep thinking and strategizing for the new resistance while hiding out in an elaborate shell game of cargo containers and shipping vessels. Amos went off on a high-risk mission to get Jim back and has gone dark, and Jim's wandering around chatting up the emperor, the mad scientist that's been cooking proto-molecule since book 1, and Teresa, the girl who stands to inherit the empire if her now proto-molecule-immortal father ever falls. Meanwhile, Duarte has scientists (played by our old friends from Cibola Burn, Elvi, and Fayez) off looking for a solar system empty enough that he can do something to poke the bear on the other side of the ring, the one that makes ships disappear if too many go through too often. What could go wrong?

As Holden says, "...the problem with thousand-year Reichs. they come and go like fireflies."

I haven't liked all the Expanse novels equally, and the previous one made me worried that the series would end on a whimper rather than a bang, but Tiamat's Wrath makes me think that it's going to be something to remember.

  • UPDATE - Rating relates to technical details of - Audible integration - Not the story, which I love.

I think it is helpful for prospective and Audible purchasers to know that this feature is not implemented. It makes switching between reading and listening modalities so easy and frankly, I was surprised it was missing.

Unfortunately, reviews require ratings. If it did not require a rating, I would have given none.

I will say, if the physical books people received were missing an expected feature such as the back cover or several pages, I would think that would be worth noting as well.
    ——
I am sure I will love the book as I have the prior books and I have looked forward to this for months! I purchased the audible and kindle version as quick as I could today.

My one disappointment is that whispersync features that allows syncing of your position between the version and the audible version is not enabled. Is this planned to be enabled soon? This technical issue reduces enjoyment of books for me and I hope it can be added soon.
  • 4 words in and I hate the authors.
EDIT Finished, and seriously, this is the best narrative of the series. Dropped a star because they learned Matrin's lessons a little too well
  • I understand the one-star review! Everybody who loves this series is very invested in all its characters, and it is hard to say good-bye to any one of them. Yes, lots of tears shed during the reading of this book, tears of joy and sadness. But you know what? At the end of book nine, we're going to have to say good-bye to all of them. So maybe it is fitting that we get to say good-bye one at a time. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Back to my headline this book is packed with everything I love about The Expanse. Fantastic people (yeah, people, not characters) living through extraordinary events.

If you are new to this series, I envy the hell out of you you have 8 great books just waiting to be read.

If you know the series and are wondering whether to buy this one or not, the answer is a resounding YES!

The Artist Way 25th Anniversary Edition Julia Cameron 9780143129257 Books Reviews

  • Published in 2002, it is alsoa workbook where you go through the different exercises over a period of 12 weeks or three months. I did all the exercises, including the morning pages. It shifted me as a person as well as helped me acknowledge the creative side of who I am. It’s really freed out some of my inner wounds and also helped me to feel much more liberated and be more creative in my personal and professional life.

I recommend this book to all people, even those who don’t think that they’re creative because really, when we allow our inner child to come out and play, we have much more joy in our lives and this will allow us to be creative in other areas in our personal and professional life.

Whatever job that you are in, you may think it does not involve creativity. You’ll be wrong. There are elements of creativity in everything that we do. Be a fuller person so that you are just much more integrated with all that you are so that you reach your fullest potential.
  • The edition is an excellent choice for using the Artists's Way workbook. Previously I had bought the print spiral bound edition, hoping to use it but I never did, because I did not want to fill in the pages of the print book, so as to save the print book for re-use or to sell later. However, in the edition, I am able to go on to my PC and copy and paste the assignments and tasks into my own Word documents, making my own book in effect to use and re-use and type in the assignments in the actual pages. To me it is well worth the extra cost to have the edition workbook to avoid typing in the assignments..
  • I loved it! I decided to actually follow the guidelines for the book - one chapter a week, doing the written exercises, the morning pages, the artist day..and I stuck to it. That is not usual for me, but I decided to give it a try..and it worked! I still do not go to my studio as often as I should and I am still not as disciplined as I should be..but it doesn't bother me as much and I keep to the thought that this should be fun...and I have more fun! The side effect that I had completely not anticipated at all, was that I lost 25 pounds over the 16 weeks (16 chapters) and I wasn't even trying. Doing the written exercises, thinking through the material, remembering things, and writing morning pages, reduced anxiety and stress and I guess I just ate less. That made me feel good, and good feelings kept building, so, I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to try a 16week course to reexamine your life journey and pursue a more creative life ahead. I have now bought this book for so many friends..but it really doesn't do the magic unless you put the time into it. So, if you buy it, agree to all the exercises, or it is just another self-help book that will not sink in. Good luck!
  • This book is very engaging with a variety of activities. However I also purchased the 25th anniversary Edition and there is too much redundancy to warrant purchasing both.
  • This is a journey. A journey of a lifetime. If you are so fortunate to open this book and workbook; your life could not ever be the same . The book took away the pain of no decisions, bad decisions and decisions made for me. I did and you may discover the creative person you are and were meant to be. Nothing is the same, for me I have broken chains that bound me to labor. I have re constructed who I am. Please get these 2 items and join me in a life worth living that can never be stolen or lost again.
  • I bought this as a gift and haven't heard how she liked it. I loved it, as did my niece when i gave it to her a few years ago. However, although I expected the anniversary edition to be especially nice it actually wasn't as nice as the original and I regretted choosing it.
  • Some people may not like this workbook because it's lined pages with quotes. That's it. But, for me, it's very helpful as a way to get me to actually do it. There are exactly 3 pages for each day of the 12 week program. If you don't fill the 3-pages, then you're behind. For me, this is helpful in motivating me to get up early and fill in the 3 pages. Plus, the quotes make writing more meaningful.
  • Even though it’s a bit too spiritual for me, honestly I almost quit on the book after reading the intro. and I was really rather skeptical about how this book would help me. It sounded a bit corny like self help book for artist. Like chicken soap for the artist soul.

But getting past that and actually getting into doing the assignments and homework the book ask that you do week after week. I found the book was really helpful. I guess its like anything else where you get what you put in out of it and it’s different for everyone.

I read somewhere that this book might have come out too soon for its own good. I think that if had added what we know today about neurology and how the brain works, instead of the spiritual stuff it would have been better off.

I have recommended this book to others (artist friends) and have had moments where I felt I needed to reread a curtain part or do a curtain writing task again. Underneath the things that turned me off, there really are some priceless gems within the pages. And if you make it too the end of the 12 weeks you’ll be glad you did.

But depending on who you are and how many issues you might have (rough childhood, stuff thats happen to you in the past) I recommend this book with a bit a caution. This book causes you to face a lot of things. So just be ready for that.

The second book in the thrilling series that began with The Philosopher’s Flight finds Robert Canderelli Weekes as a rookie Rescue and Evacuation flier on the front lines of World War I in France. He came to save lives, but has no idea how far he’ll have to go to win the war.

Thanks to a stunning flying performance and a harrowing shootout in the streets of Boston, Robert Canderelli Weekes’s lifelong dream has come true he’s the first male allowed to join the US Sigilry Corps’s Rescue and Evacuation service, an elite, all-woman team of flying medics.

But as he deploys to France during the waning days of the Great War, Sigilwoman Third-Class Canderelli learns that carrying the injured from the front lines to the field hospital is not the grand adventure he imagined. His division, full of misfits and renegades, is stretched the breaking point and has no patience for a man striving to prove himself. Slowly, Robert wins their trust and discovers his comrades are plotting to end the Great War by outlawed philosophical means. Robert becomes caught up in their conspiracy, running raids in enemy territory and uncovering vital intelligence. Friends old and new will need his help with a dangerous scheme that just might win the war overnight and save a few million lives. But the German smokecarvers have plans of their own a devastating all-out attack that threatens to destroy the Corps and France itself. Naturally, Robert is trapped right in the thick of it.

The Philosopher’s War is the electrifying next chapter in Robert Weekes’s story, filled with heroic, unconventional women, thrilling covert missions, romance and, of course, plenty of aerial adventures. The second book in a series “that grabs readers from its opening lines and doesn’t loosen its grip or lessen its hold all the way through” (Associated Press), Tom Miller again brings Robert’s world to life with unrivaled imagination, ambition, and wit.

PDF The Philosopher War The Philosophers Series Book 2 edition by Tom Miller Literature Fiction eBooks

"Miller is a wonderful storyteller and the book held my interest from beginning to end. It used to be said "it's science fiction if the writer believes it really could happen, and fantasy if he believes it couldn't," but like the best fantasy, his book has real verisimilitude, it is completely believable, and he convinces us that the magic elements are lawful and technology-like. It seems hard to believe that he can entertain us by descriptions of the magical sigilry gear and its application, but the fact is that he does.

The story is mostly set on the campus of Radcliffe College (once the women's sister college of all-male Harvard), around the time of World War I. The magical technology, or technological magic, is called "sigilry," and enables "philosophers" to fly (at several hundred miles per hours), transport objects, communicate, and do other things by properly drawing magic signs called "sigils." In one of many twists and inversions of our world, sigilry is almost entirely the province of women, and the protagonist, a male, struggles with sex discrimination. This all sounds silly but in Miller's hands, it isn't. And while this may not be Great Literature, the characters are convincingly drawn and I cared about what was happening to them. I found it fresh, original, pitch-perfect and wonderfully entertaining."

The Philosopher War The Philosophers Series Book 2 edition by Tom Miller Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • Author Tom Miller's debut novel The Philosopher's Flight is a genre-bending steampunk wild ride. In this world, witches or wizards are philosophers and all the best ones are female. In spite of their amazing prowess in military campaigns, philosophers are feared. Trenchers, a sort of evangelical set comprised largely of men who fear and despise these powerful women, continually oppose and threaten the philosophers in ways both physical and legal. The harrowing opening passages evoke lynchings and the witch trials, while throughout the book we see Trenchers attack these women for everything from their use of birth control to their refusal to bow to the patriarchy. (We also see that these women are vulnerable to mistreatment by a military that quite literally exploits them.)

Set during World War I, the story follows a rare male philosopher, Robert Weekes, as he is taken on as a contingency student at Radcliffe College, one of only a few token men training with women. Most of the men are merely theoretical philosophers, but Robert, or Boober, as his Montana family lovingly calls him, is an empirical philosopher, raised to fly. Encouraged and cajoled into his skills by his mother and older sisters, he is a truly unusual man and not just because he's an expert sigilist.

Giving us the experience of role reversal, with a sole male prodigy among women encountering the derision, discrimination, and abuse that was usually heaped on women entering largely male educational settings during this era and too long after, Miller offers an accessible story about gender constraints perceived about talent and wrongly placed on education.

All of that sounds almost preachy and this book was anything but that- it was great fun to read. We have a wonderful set of secondary characters and a lot of humor to soften the blows of Robert's progress in the philosophical ranks. A renaissance man himself, Tom Miller is a practicing ER doctor with an MFA in writing. He's also going at the top of my Campbell Award nominations next year. A wonderful new voice.
  • Miller is a wonderful storyteller and the book held my interest from beginning to end.

I found it fresh, original, pitch-perfect and wonderfully entertaining.
  • This novel has a unique and interesting premise. It is a well written and engaging story. Wouldn't it be interesting to have these extraordinary skills!? There is the tension between those that have these skills- mostly women- and those who fear the use of the philosophers's talents. There is a sweet love story but the tension between the groups and the outbreaks of violence keeps the story moving.
  • I thought I was done reading anything using the "Hogwarts" formula, but Miller proved me wrong. The thought and detail put into the "science" of philosophical magic, along with vivid descriptions of flight, and engaging characters, pulled me in.

I also don't enjoy stories about sexism and usually find them preachy, but Miller won me over there on that point too. Perhaps it is his male point of view , but in my opinion, he manages to dig into the issue and extract just the conflict, irony and suspense he need from it to drive the story along and flesh out his characters.

Like the body weight that dogs the hero's early efforts at speed flying, there is some fluff in the writing and the focus drifts from the plot a bit more than I prefer from time to time. But Miller manages to convey a strong steampunk flavor without going over the top like many stories in the genre do. His other strengths more than make up for this.

Once in a while I gamble on a new author. Sometimes I regret it. This time I did not. Definitely take Miller for a test flight.
  • Believe the hype. A wonderful book. Tom Miller invents an early 20th century world where magic (of a sort) works (but is still feared by many). He weaves that element into a sort of suffragette novel, even though the protagonist is a man (and a good character in his own right). Since the "magic" is seen as something exclusively belonging to women, the hero suffers a large amount of prejudice trying to join their ranks, both from the outraged women themselves and from men who can't understand why he would turn his back on "manly" pursuits. Great adventure and hair-raising rescues. Really hope this is the beginning of a series.
  • Warning! When you open this book, you will find it nearly impossible to put down. It's an alternative history that turns your perched upside down. A cross between a Harry Potter magic, and a suffrage age novel. All characters are engaging and often humorous. It's simply a rollicking good read. Have fun!

  • If you do not believe in evolution, then do not get this book. It would have been great if it had just been a book answering interesting facts without bias, but sadly it is not. I even would have tolerated one section about evolution, however this book makes mention of evolution all throughout the book.
  • My kiddo is a reader. I mean a legit bookworm. I played baseball, she wants to do dumb things like "learn new things" and "figure stuff out." I worked on cars, she wants to "find the meaning to life." Looks like we're not adding trophies to THIS house. Anyway, unless you want your 8 year old to be some nerdy, super smart kid, and be curious, and into science, and stimulate the ability to look deeper into things and become generally well-rounded and probably smarter than most average adults and the envy of all her friends and who will be continually supported by her proud parents for her thirst of knowledge, then don't buy this book.
  • This is such an interesting gift! My 12 y/o niece is a really girly girl who just wants girl stuff all the time for gifts. I am a biologist and feel it is my duty to try and get her interested in science, I used to really enjoy getting books like this when I was young. I read some of the book before I wrapped it up and I think most kids would find this stuff hilarious and entertaining! I don't really think this is an appropriate gift for an adult, most things are stuff we already have learned, just an FYI.
  • Do not buy if you do not agree with the theory of evolution. I will be returning this book.
  • I bought this for my 7 year old son and it's perfect! It's much bigger than expected as well. The pages are very colorful and makes learning so much more fun! I would HIGHLY recommend this book!!
  • Really fun, interesting facts and written in such a way that I think kids will really love it. The layout of every page is very visually pleasing and makes it easy to read in "chunks" for kids.
  • This is a stellar book for young readers. The colors and overall presentation are engaging. I've bought kid science-y dictionary type books in the past on , and was disappointed at the lack of high definition photos and kid-friendly text. This is a great way to give kids a taste of science - to peak their initial interest and encourage them to perform additional research.
  • My 8 year old son is very interested in this book and is always picking it up when he has down time. He is always spouting out facts he learned in the book.

From a little-known chapter of knitting history comes the Danish “night sweater”―part of women’s traditional dress in the 1800s, these sweaters have long been overlooked in surveys of Scandinavian handcrafting and design. But now celebrated Danish knitting expert Vivian Hњxbro has brought together diligent research, comprehensive charts, and her own painstaking efforts to reconstruct these carefully-preserved garments to create a unique collection of single-color relief patterns. Within, knitted, purled, and crossed stitches form hundreds of classic star motifs, edgings, horizontal and vertical pattern panels, and striking “traveling stitch” designs.

Learn the history of night sweaters in Denmark, with a rundown of special techniques and regional knitting practices, and then dive into a neatly-organized library of 200 charts for motifs of all kinds. Follow step-by-step instructions as you reconstruct traditional Danish sweaters in contemporary sizes, work traditionally-inspired patterns for a stole, top, tunic, and more―or use these motifs, edgings, and decorative panels in projects of your own design.

New Orleans’s reputation as a decadent city stems in part from its environmental precariousness, its Francophilia, its Afro-Caribbean connections, its Catholicism, and its litany of alleged “vices,” encompassing prostitution, miscegenation, homosexuality, and any number of the seven deadly sins. An evocative work of cultural criticism, Robert Azzarello’s Three Hundred Years of Decadence argues that decadence can convey a more nuanced meaning than simple decay or decline conceived in physical, social, or moral terms. Instead, within New Orleans literature, decadence possesses a complex, even paradoxical relationship with concepts like beauty and health, progress, and technological advance.

Azzarello presents the concept of decadence, along with its perception and the uneasy social relations that result, as a suggestive avenue for decoding the long, shifting story of New Orleans and its position in the transatlantic world. By analyzing literary works that span from the late seventeenth century to contemporary speculations about the city’s future, Azzarello uncovers how decadence often names a transfiguration of values, in which ideas about supposed good and bad cannot maintain their stability and end up morphing into one another. These evolving representations of a decadent New Orleans, which Azzarello traces with attention to both details of local history and insights from critical theory, reveal the extent to which the city functions as a contact zone for peoples and cultures from Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Drawing on a deep and understudied archive of New Orleans literature, Azzarello considers texts from multiple genres (fiction, poetry, drama, song, and travel writing), including many written in languages other than English. His analysis includes such works of transcription and translation as George Washington Cable’s “Creole Slave Songs” and Mary Haas’s Tunica Texts, which he places in dialogue with canonical and recent works about the city, as well as with neglected texts like Ludwig von Reizenstein’s German-language serial The Mysteries of New Orleans and Charles Chesnutt’s novel Paul Marchand, F.M.C.

With its careful analysis and focused scope, Three Hundred Years of Decadence uncovers the immense significance―historically, politically, and aesthetically―that literary imaginings of a decadent New Orleans hold for understanding the city’s position as a multicultural, transatlantic contact zone.

"Stunning. Sean McFate is a new Sun Tzu." (Admiral James Stavridis (retired), former supreme allied commander at NATO)

An urgent, fascinating exploration of warfare - past, present, and future - and what we must do if we want to win today from an 82nd Airborne veteran, former private military contractor, and professor of war studies at the National Defense University.

War is timeless. Some things change - weapons, tactics, technology, leadership, objectives - but our desire to go into battle does not. We are living in the age of durable disorder - a period of unrest created by numerous factors China's rise, Russia's resurgence, America's retreat, global terrorism, international criminal empires, climate change, dwindling natural resources, and bloody civil wars. Sean McFate has been on the front lines of deep state conflicts and has studied and taught the history and practice of war. He's seen firsthand the horrors of battle and understands the depth and complexity of the current global military situation.

This devastating turmoil has given rise to difficult questions. What is the future of war? How can we survive? If Americans are drawn into major armed conflict, can we win? McFate calls upon the legends of military study Carl von Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, and others, as well as his own experience, and carefully constructs the new rules for the future of military engagement, the ways we can fight and win in an age of entropy one where corporations, mercenaries, and rogue states have more power and "nation states" have less. With examples from the Roman conquest, World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and others, he tackles the differences between conventional and future war, the danger in believing technology will save us, the genuine leverage of psychological and "shadow" warfare, and much more. McFate's new rules distill the essence of war today, describing what it is in the real world, not what we believe or wish it to be.

Some of these principles are ancient, others are new, but all will permanently shape war now and in the future. By following them, he argues, we can prevail. But if we do not, terrorists, rogue states, and others who do not fight conventionally will succeed - and rule the world.

"The New Rules of War is an outstanding am long-overdue corrective to modern American strategic thinking, which remains obsessed with technology and the drive for decisive victory using conventional military force. It is not without flaws, but these are more than offset by the scythe that McFate brings to the conventional wisdom.

McFate’s essential premise is that conventional warfare is dead and that strategists need to focus on the tools that our adversaries use to circumvent conventional strength. This is not in itself a groundbreaking assertion—its become a de rigueur statement amongst strategists since the rise of insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. But as McFate points out, the chorus of voices making this point has done nothing to change the military’s emphasis on technical solutions to non-technical problems. This has only worsened since DoD reprioritized great power competition. McFate’s understanding of the coming “durable disorder” and the changing character of warfare is refreshing and should be considered deeply and at length by all involved in defense policy.

The book’s imperfections come not in McFate’s assessments, but in his tone and style. He often comes across as overly polemical, almost as though he has an axe to grind. While this doubtless makes for quicker reading--perhaps especially to a lay audience--it leads to blanket statements that undermine the strength of his arguments. For example, McFate dismisses the utility of Clausewitz to discussions of modern conflict, labeling him the “high priest of conventional warfare,” despite having recapitulated Clausewitz’s own distinction between the immutable nature of war and the changing character of warfare only a few paragraphs earlier. This is sloppy: while Clausewitz’s discussion on the conduct of warfare from the Napoleonic era is obviously divorced from conflict today, his understanding of war’s political nature, and that its conduct is governed by the blending of passion, reason, and chance remain as timeless as ever. Indeed McFate’s whole book could be read as an answer to the Prussian’s statement that the first and most important act of strategy is to understand the nature of war one is engaging in, neither mistaking it for nor attempting to change it into something alien to its nature.

Similar statements are sprinkled throughout the book, but they pale in comparison to the fresh thinking he brings to the table. Ultimately, the US and its allies are doomed to suffer failed strategies and increasing insecurity unless they understand, as McFate does, that the utility of conventional force is declining and that new method of advancing the national interest are required."

  • I recommend the book. I agree with the other reviewers. There is some overreaching at times, but overreach is part of being passionate about changes. I have four disagreements or perhaps added perspectives as disagreement is too strong a word

    1) The problem is not only an over reliance on technology vs human wits, but lacking the understanding of what is truly threatening from a technological perspective. A good example is an EMP. The author rightly so pointed out that the use of air carriers and the attack on Pearl Harbor were predicted, but these predictions dismissed by the establishment. The money spent on the F35 would have been enough not only to better protect the grid and having spare parts available, but also to protect nuclear reactors, military bases dependent on electricity and, as battery technology evolves, to provide large household batteries and renewables to most households in the US. The F35 is the battleship of yesterday. But again, this is technology vs. technology + imagination.

    2) Borrowing from Kissinger, it is possible to divide the world in three historical moments places where war as a political tool is unthinkable (e.g. between West European states), places where national interests and alliances resemble the 1st World War (e.g. the Asia of China, Japan, etc.) and places where the 30-year war did not take place as yet (e.g. the islamic world). Of course this is a simplification, but the increased complexity of warfare is not only be due to the rise of non-state actors but also to the multidimensional interaction of different historical moments.

    3) The author stresses that the rise of non-state agents, the use of subterfuge and weaponization of information and the impact of mercenaries will change how war is waged. In fact, it has already changed. He stresses that the laws of war will not or may not be followed if one is to be victorious. However, the doctrine of jus in bello and jus ad bellum precedes nation states. My understanding is that the Catholic Church developed these ideas to assist Christian Princes to wage war in moral way in a world characterized by disorder. Of course this is not a book about the moral of warfare, but I am sure that the author gave some thought to the issue. A new understanding of jus in bello and ad bellum will be necessary for democratic societies to succeed, not a utilitarian dismissal of the subject.

    4) I am a civilian and by no means know how military education is delivered. However, I suspect that the necessary changes of education must go much deeper than the early introduction to strategy studies. The ability to think differently depends in part on the ability to not believe one's opinions too strongly. There is benefit of having doubts. I suspect that the strength of certainty is a preferred quality in the military career. This is surely difficult to change.

To a degree, these are straw man arguments. The author's positions are fluid enough to accommodate all four points. I enjoyed the book very much. I am sure his classes are not only informative, but truly formative of officers and others lucky enough to meet him in person.
  • Sean has done a brilliant job of capturing the essence of modern warfare. He describes why the American military's preferred form of warfare has failed over the past 50 years to win a single war, and how our enemies are out-thinking us and winning, often without engaging us in direct combat. He proposes ten new rules for waging war in an era of durable disorder in which states and non-state actors fight without regard for our geographic, organizational, and functional boundaries; how they use information much more skillfully; and how private military corporations are commercializing war and relegating Westphalian warfare to the scrap heap of history. This is graduate-level military art, but Sean simplifies the complexity of modern warfare so that novices can understand it, while experienced practitioners can expand their professional horizons and make sense of the last 18 years of wars in the Middle east and elsewhere. This book should be mandatory reading in professional military education currricula, and in the library of every national security professional.
